Official info

Fanfán Tulipán was originally formed in the Spring 2009 by Eliška Svobodová, a student of composition at the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory in Prague. After a few changes in personnel, the line up currently consists of Eliška Svobodová (composer, vocal, melodica), Štepán Zbytovský (flute, bass clarinet), Jan Mazura (piano), Jan Neruda (bass guitar) and Šimon Hajdovský (drums). Besides original compositions the signature sound of the band is created by the wind instrument melodica and the Estonian cither kannel, both frequently used in the arrangements. In 2009, the band has won two music contests: Mladí ladí jazz (Young Tune Jazz) and the Czech part of an international competition called Jazz Prix. Because of that, Fanfán Tulipán was able to release its debut album Polyorama in February 2011. Also, two pieces from this record succeeded in Gramodeska, European contest for young composers and in November 2011 they appeared on an LP compilation. The band has performed at the Czech, Slovak, German and Bulgarian jazz festivals (Jazz Goes To Town, Bohemia Jazz Fest, Bratislavské Jazzové Dni, Jazz an der Donau, Bansko Jazz Fest etc.).
